Garden City Community College, also known as GCCC, is a fully accredited community college found in Garden City in the state of Kansas. The school is known for its nursing program, which is accredited by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. Garden City Community College was founded in 1919 in order to provide post secondary education the residents of the area. The school first started in the facilities in Sabine Hall and Calkins Hall in Buffalo Jones Avenue with Garden City High School. The first classes had just a few dozen students. Then in 1954, the college moved to the new Garden City High School. In 1965, the Kansas Legislature passed the Community College Act, which authorized the building of 22 independent colleges. Among these colleges included GCCC.
GCCC offers more than 30 programs that lead Associate of Arts degrees. Students that earn an their associate of arts degree can continue their degree with affiliated colleges and universities to complete their 4 year degree. The school’s Associate of Science in Nursing is a specialized degree designed to prepare students to pass the NCLEX-RN licensure examination and become licensed as a Registered Nurse.
The school also offers the Associate of Applied Science, which is a terminal degree designed to train their students with occupational skills in a several of areas of occupation. Among these areas include Business, Mass Communications, Agriculture, Environmental Technology, Hospitality Management, Personal Service, Health Information Management, Industrial Technology, Flight Instructor, Public Service and Information Technology.
Garden City Community College is a member of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. The school offers several sports programs, including in football, basketball, and baseball. The school has a baseball filed called the Tangeman Fields, named in honor of Dr. James Tangeman, a former president. The school colors are brown and gold and the school nickname are the Broncbusters and Lady Broncbusters.
